Objectives

What is the purpose of PSCORE?

 PSCORE has two primary objectives:.

  •  To encourage harmony and understanding between North and South Korea through education, awareness campaigns, and discussion.
  • To address potential barriers to reunification of the Korean peninsula and suggest alternatives to minimize these. For example, many South Koreans worry that reunification would be detrimental for the South Korean economy because it would be forced to absorb the North's immense poverty. PSCORE creates space for discussion of issues such as these, and encourages creative and innovative responses.

How does PSCORE achieve these goals?

  • Education Program: One-on-one tutoring program and weekly pronunciation classes for North Korean refugees/defectors living in Seoul. PSCORE also collects firsthand accounts of news from North Korea and distributes it to the international community.
  • International Conferences: The Seoul office hosted an International Youth Conference on North Korean Human Rights in Fall 2009 and will be hosting another human rights conference during North Korean Freedom Week in April 2010.
  • Online Campaigns: PSCORE encourages university students to creatively address the issue of democratization in North Korea.  South Korean university students have submitted original videos and essays reflecting their views of North Korea; these submissions are made available to the public via online resources such as Facebook and YouTube.
  • Human Rights Data Collection and Analysis:  PSCORE collects detailed evidence about human rights abuses in North Korea through interviews with North Korean defectors/refugees living in South Korea. This data is used to create both written and innovative visual depictions of the human rights crisis in North Korea.
