A PSCORE source reported that there are countless of orphaned children at Chongjin Station begging for food. Mr. A, who was visiting Chongjin, sat down and opened his lunch box, when a young girl of about six came by asking if she could have some. The young girl reminded him of his own daughter, so he gave her a handful of rice wrapped in a plastic bag. Immediately afterwards, 10 or so orphaned children came over also begging for food.

It is reported that there are many beggars of all ages scattered around train stations and plazas. The situation is said to be even worse than during the North Korean famine of the 1990s (also known as the Arduous March or the March of Tribulation). In addition, many retailers are reported to have collapsed following the currency reform, leading to a notable decrease in commerce. The overall number of people in trains and stations is also said to have significantly decreased.

As of the 18th of August, the currency exchange rate stands at 100 yuan for 22,500 won, and rice sells for 1,200 won per kilogram.
