The eighth of July is the anniversary of the death of Kim Ilsung, a day that is marked by memorial services for the former leader throughout North Korea. Even after death, the iron-fisted politician who successfully prevented the roots from democracy from sprouting in the country still seems to demand unquestionable loyalty from those 22 million people living in the North.
A PSCORE source has reported that two young boys were electrocuted to death near their school on July 8. Two first-graders attending North Korea’s Sambong Elementary School had headed to the mountains to collect flowers to place on a statue of Kim Ilsung in their town. However, while collecting flowers they took a wrong step and fell off a cliff, rolling down the mountain before getting caught in some electric wire where they were electrocuted to death.
However, even in a country that demands total sacrifice for its leader, the death of the two young boys has elicited no response from the government. So far, there has been no effort by the government to provide any financial support or investigate any wrongdoing in the death of the two young children. While there is no doubt that their death would be considered an honourable one in the country, one wonders why there has been no thought on the part of the authorities to how the parents felt after hearing about their sudden loss.
