Election of Representatives to Attend National Conference
A national conference of party members was held during the morning hours of August 16, reported a PSCORE source yesterday. The conference gathered business and social organizations from all around the country, and each organization elected a party representative to represent their interests in the upcoming national representatives’ conference. The election held in the meeting was undemocratic, and simply reconfirmed the selection of “department managers” and “junior level party secretaries” who were chosen in advance.
Those elected as representatives are set to leave together for Pyongyang to attend the national representatives' conference, which is scheduled to be held in early September. Currently, the exact date for their departure is still under discussion, reported the source.
Crackdown on Cell Phone Use Continues
North Korean authorities have recently installed cell-phone signal detectors in Musan, Haeryong, and Onsong and other areas to crack down on people using cell phones to call relatives or friends outside of the country. Due to this situation, the PSCORE source interviewed for this article was unable to provide a detailed account of the meeting that took place today and was forced to quickly hang up the phone.
Prices Continue to Fall
Recent reports now indicate that the North Korean exchange rate is in steady decline. Currently, 100 Chinese yuan is selling at 19,800 won. Rice of good quality selling for 1,150 won per kilogram, whereas inexpensive Chinese rice is priced at 850 won per kilogram. The price of corn has fallen substantially due to the new harvests produced by some areas of North Korea and is now hovering between 550 to 600 won per kilogram.
